COVID-19 diagnostic methods<\/h2><\/div>

As a result of COVID-19<\/strong>, all kinds of information are arriving about the different types of tests<\/strong> that can answer whether we have had the coronavirus<\/strong> or if we are currently infected. But not all tests always give the same information. Let’s find out what type of tests are carried out<\/strong>, how they work and what response each of them gives in this regard.<\/p>\n

Although there have already been institutions that have disseminated information seeking to resolve doubts about the different diagnostic techniques<\/strong> that are being used with COVID-19<\/strong>, it is important to help make them known and also to know how to interpret the results they offer.<\/p>\n

Today there are different diagnostic techniques, virological and serological<\/strong>, that are used for the detection of COVID-19<\/strong>. The best known, at least in the early phases of the coronavirus<\/strong>, have been the so-called PCR tests<\/strong>, which offer the greatest diagnostic certainty to determine if\u00a0the infection is active in the individual<\/strong> at the time of the test.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>

COVID-19<\/strong> Virological Tests<\/h2><\/div>

We have all seen (or performed) these virological tests<\/strong> in which a swab<\/strong> is used to carry them out and biological samples are collected from the nose<\/strong>, mouth, or throat<\/strong>. Although they are effective tests<\/strong>, they must be performed with laboratory equipment and wait several hours or even days to know the result.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>

New Rapid Antigen Tests<\/h2><\/div>

To shorten times<\/strong>, for some time now we have also been working with a new type of rapid antigen tests<\/strong>, which are based on the same type of samples<\/strong>, but are capable<\/strong> of providing a result in less than 10 minutes<\/strong>. In addition, rapid test<\/strong>\u00a0do not require laboratory equipment and each kit<\/strong> includes everything necessary to perform the diagnostic test wherever<\/strong> we are. Rapid antigen tests<\/strong>, like PCR tests<\/strong>, confirm, if positive<\/strong>, an active COVID-19 infection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>

Serological tests antibodies<\/h2><\/div>

Another system and terminology that citizens are already becoming familiar with are serological tests.<\/strong> These are based on a blood sample that allows<\/strong>, with a very small amount (a drop, in a system very similar to that used to determine glucose levels in diabetics), to identify whether the person has been in contact with the virus and has developed antibodies<\/strong>. Any result provided by a virological test is considered definitive<\/strong>. The negative, however<\/strong>, and always after evaluation by the health professional, may require repeating the test.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The question about when to perform each of these tests depends on medical criteria<\/strong>. Thus, while virological tests<\/strong> are performed when the person presents symptoms<\/strong> or has had close contact with someone infected<\/strong>, serological<\/strong> tests are often used<\/strong> when we want to know if the person has been in contact with the virus<\/strong> and has developed antibodies.<\/p>\n<\/div>

COVID-19<\/strong> PCR Tests<\/h2><\/div>

For all these reasons, and always during the incubation period<\/strong>, in the first week of possible infection<\/strong>, virological tests (PCR and\/or rapid antigen detection tests) are used.<\/strong><\/p>\n
